New York Red Bulls Hire Sandro Schwarz As Next Manager

The New York Red Bulls have hired their next manager in club history in Sandro Schwarz. The 45 year old German comes in with a long resume of coaching within multiple divisions of German soccer and a little in Russia. His time as a manager has seen him managing the likes of; Hertha BSC, Mainz 05 (and their 2nd team), Dynamo Moscow, FC Eschborn, and Wehen Wiesbaden. In his 341 professional games managed, Schwarz has a record of 128 wins, 74 draws, and 139 losses.

Sandro Schwarz was given his first coaching experience in the German 2nd division back during the 2008/2009 season. He became more of an Interim Manager for Wehen Wiesbaden during that season that ultimately led to the club being relegated to the 3rd division. Schwarz would remain at the club as an Assistant Manager until the 2011/2012 season where he was hired as Manager of FC Eschborn in the German 5th Division. In his first season with the club, he would win the league and gain promotion into the German 4th division. After leaving Eschborn, Schwarz would depart the club to join the Mainz 05 organization, starting off as their U19 Manager. With success at the U19 level for Mainz, the club promoted him to Manager of Mainz 05 II where he would be back coaching within the German professional ranks. Coaching Mainz 05 II in the German 3rd division, Schwarz would impress once again and eventually would end up with the 1st team job in the German Bundesliga. Schwarz would go on to manage Mainz 05 for about two and a half seasons (85 games) in the German top division before leaving Germany for the Dynamo Moscow job in the Russian top division.

Schwarz would find success once again with Dynamo Moscow, winning 32 of his 57 games in charge of the club. Even though he failed to win a trophy in Russia, he proved his abilities of managing a top division club outside of the Mainz 05 system. In 2022, Schwarz resigned from his position as manager of Dynamo Moscow and a few months later made his way back to Germany to take over as Manager of Hertha BSC. I would argue that this is where his biggest “failure” as a manager came as he would end up with a record of 5 wins, 7 draws, and 17 losses and being fired before the season's end. That Hertha BSC team would end up being relegated at the end of the year.

As a young manager with already a long and successful resume to his name seems like a perfect fit to come to Major League Soccer to continue his development. Schwarz brings to a New York/New Jersey market over 100 games of management experience in the German Bundesliga, close to 50 games of management experience in the Russian Premier League, and over 150 additional games of experience within lower division German soccer. He also comes as one of the few manager hirings without connections to other Red Bull clubs globally. This feels like a move that could be long lasting for the Red Bulls if he is given the time to learn the game here in the U.S. as well as implement his roster/tactics.
