LA Galaxy Sign Former LAFC Goalkeeper John McCarthy

The LA Galaxy have signed free agent goalkeeper John McCarthy ahead of the 2024 MLS season. The 31 year old MLS veteran has won a MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield over the last few seasons with crosstown rivals LAFC. McCarthy has 168 career games played between LAFC, Philadelphia Union, Inter Miami CF, Philadelphia Union II, Tampa Bay Rowdies, and Rochester New York FC. In those games, he has recorded 56 shutouts as well as winning USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year, USL Championship Best XI, and USL Championship Rookie of the Year.

There are heavy rumors that the LA Galaxy will move on from goalkeeper Jonathan Bond this off-season. If Bond leaves, that would leave the Galaxy roster with McCarthy and Novak Micovic. With McCarthy’s success in recent seasons for LAFC, there is a chance that he becomes the next starting goalkeeper for the Galaxy. I’d also argue that the 22 year old Micovic could impress enough to claim the starting spot. Nevertheless, we will most likely be seeing a change in net for the Galaxy. Whether it is McCarthy or Micovic, we will have to wait and see.
