New England Revolution Sign Centerback Jonathan Mensah

New England Revolution Sign Centerback Jonathan Mensah

Another top free agent centerback is off the board. The New England Revolution has signed Jonathan Mensah ahead of the 2024 MLS season. The 33 year old centerback rejoins manager Caleb Porter who he won a MLS Cup with in Columbus back in 2020. The former Ghana International defender now heads to his third MLS club after a season stint with the San Jose Earthquakes. Mensah has 329 career games played between the Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes, Thonon Evian Grand Geneve FC, Free State Stars, Anzhi Makhachkala, and Granada CF. In those games he has scored 14 goals, 5 assists, won a MLS Cup, a Spanish 3rd Division title, Campeones Cup, and been named to the MLS Best XI in 2020.

Mensah now joins the Revs where he will add some centerback depth to a group that is already consisting of Andrew Farrell, Dave Romney, Henry Kessler, and Santiago Suarez. I expect a majority of the centerback minutes to be eaten up by Farrell, Romney, and Kessler in 2024. However, depth is needed at an all time premium now within MLS and having a Jonathan Mensah, even at his older age, as your club’s fourth centerback is a fantastic move. Great job here from Caleb Porter and Curt Onalfo if you ask me!
